Joey was a gifted athlete, but his anger and impulsivity were getting in his way at school. To help him manage his behavior and emotions, he was referred to Beech Brook and began working with Pauline Congeni, Clinical Lead Therapist.

Pauline immediately saw Joey's potential, but knew that if he couldn't get his emotions under control, he would lose the opportunities that would come his way.

At first, progress was slow. Joey consistently gave Pauline a hard time and resisted any kind of connection with her. It took Pauline two years to get him to begin trusting her, but her perseverance paid off. Once Joey began to trust Pauline, he was able to accept the help she offered and his behavior turned around immensely.

Years later, Joey ended up going to college and won a National Championship in Track. He recognized the role that Pauline and Beech Brook played in his journey-- he visited her after his win and gave her a picture of himself with the trophy -- and now works as a hospital administrator.

Pauline's work with Joey is a shining example of what Beech Brook brings to the children and families we serve - a dedication to helping clients who are difficult to reach, to give them confidence and a stronger belief in themselves.

Pauline taught Joey that he mattered, that he had support, and that he could do anything he set his mind to. At Beech Brook, we believe all children deserve that lesson.
